Donald Trump is scheduled to visit his monument of hate – the wall on the U.S.-México border – on Tuesday. As readers likely know, Donald Trump launched his presidential campaign in 2015 by labeling Mexicans as “rapists.” Trump also stated that México sends its “worst” to the country. As his campaign developed, Trump promised to build a wall on the U.S.-México border from sea to sea. He also promised that México would pay for the wall.
Although Trump is facing a second impeachment at the House and is on his final nine days of his presidency, he will nonetheless head to the border to argue that he kept his promises to his constituency.
The Trump administration has built less than 500 miles of fences along the border. Except for about 12 miles, the rest of the wall construction was bolstering existing sections of barriers along the southern border. Only 12 miles are new barriers. None of the construction was a wall. Rather, it is a fence along the border.
México did not pay for the wall construction.
Of the almost 2,000 miles of the southern border, only about 40% has a barrier along it.
Joe Biden has stated that he will immediately halt construction of wall construction upon taking office. However, Biden has said he will not take down any of Trump’s wall construction.
Trump is scheduled to be at Alamo, just outside of McAllen, Texas tomorrow.
According to The Hill, Rep. Vicente Gonzalez (D-Texas) has asked local officials not to honor Trump’s visit. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, both Republicans, are not expected to attend, according to The Hill article.
El Paso Congresswoman Veronica Escobar (D-Texas) has not released any statements regarding the Trump visit by publication time.
That Trump is using his final days in office to highlight his call for wall construction along the U.S.-México border demonstrates the xenophobia that drove the Trump presidency.
