Today, the emergency $600 weekly federal unemployment stipend expires. As of now, Congress is unable to come to an agreement about how to move forward on stimulating the economy as the Coronavirus pandemic continues to destroy the economy. With the November elections less than 100 days away, it is surprising that the Republicans have put themselves in this position.
Most agree that Americans generally vote on how they feel about the economy. Almost twenty million have no confidence in the economy and many will be homeless by the time the November elections come around.
The two biggest losers on not dealing with the unemployment emergency are the Republicans and Donald Trump. The Democrats just need to sit by – behind their $3 trillion proposal – and let the Republicans fight among themselves over how to move forward.
It comes down to perception. Are Americans economically comfortable?
Over 250 million voters cast a vote in 2016. About 20 million are facing evictions as they remain unemployed because of the pandemic. How many of the 20 million are voters is unknown but it comes down to perception.
Whether a voter has a job or not during this time does not matter because of the optics of homelessness, long lines at the unemployment offices and business closures makes voters uneasy.
Readers may want to argue that American taxpayers cannot afford any more bailouts or that paying $600 a week to the unemployed distinctiveness them from going back to work. All that may be true, but most American voter are uninformed voters. They cast votes on perceptions.
Economic well being is the driving force behind many voters. The economy does not make most Americans feel comfortable today.
Without a stimulus package before any more economic damage happens, the Republicans and Donald Trump will suffer the anger of the voters at the ballot boxes in November.
