Seven years ago today, the City of El Paso continued its revitalization plans for downtown El Paso by making way for the ballpark. The ballpark was the cornerstone of the attempt by city leaders to create an arena at the location of an Hispanic community known as Duranguito.
To make room for the arena, that is currently under litigation, the City displaced the residents of the Duranguito community.
To accomplish its gentrification goals, the City of El Paso borrowed heavily in the hopes of paying off the debt through higher tax revenues from new development. The City of El Paso, like other cities, is now facing serious economic repercussions due to the Covic-19 pandemic.
The demolition of the city hall seven years ago today started the path that city’s residents face today with the global economic meltdown.
