El Paso Politics has learned that Carl Robinson has secured a significant endorsement for the March 2022 primaries. There has been talk of Carl Robinson drawing several opponents for the primaries over the last few weeks. Today, El Paso Politics has learned that Sergio Coronado filed to run against Robinson for the Precinct 4 county commissioner seat. The Texas Secretary of State candidate website lists Coronado as the only Robinson opponent as of press time. Candidates have until next Monday to file to run for office.
Coronado is currently the Canutillo School District Board of Trustees president. He was elected for his second term in 2018. Previously Coronado served on the Board in 2002 through 2014. Last year, the Canutillo School District took two bond measures to the voters. Both were rejected by voters by a wide margin. El Paso Politics reported on Wednesday that the consultant behind the failed bond measures was Vince Perez. Sources have told El Paso Politics that it was Sergio Coronado that brought Perez to the school board’s attention. In 2018, Silvestre Reyes told us exclusively that he believes that Claudia Ordaz Perez, who is married to Vince Perez, stole a campaign laptop and gave it to Beto O’Rourke. Reyes lost his seat to O’Rourke in 2012.
Last year, Sergio Coronado told the El Paso Times that he had been delinquent on his federal taxes in 2008. [1] However, Coronado had previously told KVIA in 2014 that he owed the IRS for back taxes for every year between 2004 through 2009. In 2014, Coronado owed almost $69,000 in back taxes, according to the KVIA report. [2]
Congressman Endorses Carl Robinson
In other breaking news, El Paso Politics learned today the former Congressman Silvestre Reyes has endorsed Carl Robinson. Reyes, in a statement released by the Robinson campaign said about Robinson:
“For years Canutillo has suffered every time we have heavy rains. Commissioner Robinson knows the circumstances our community regularly endures as a consequence of these downpours. He rolls up his sleeves and has been working on making solid improvements for our community. Commissioner Robinson has always stood with Canutillo. While Commissioner Robinson has been good to Canutillo, all of Precinct 4 has benefited as a result of his leadership. I ask that my Canutillo family and friends stand with our friend Commissioner Robinson and send him back to Commissioners Court to finish the job.”
Robinson was elected in 2018 as the first African American county commissioner for his precinct. Previously, Robinson served as the city representative for city council District 4 from 2009 through 2017.
In a telephone interview today, Carl Robinson told El Paso Politics that “I am incredibly proud to have received the endorsement of former congressman Silvestre Reyes, especially coming from someone with such a strong presence in the Canutillo community. Congressman Reyes is a pillar of our community and has been a dedicated public servant for many years. I am very appreciative of his confidence of my ability to serve west and northeast El Paso.”
The primary is scheduled on March 1, 2022.
