July 3, 2020 El Paso, TX – After all the PRIDE celebrations and Independence Day Holiday, a local performing troupe calling themselves the El Paso Quarantine Players, will be performing a one-time only, live, shelter-at-home performance of Robert Harling’s play of “Steel Magnolias” via Zoom in recognition of PFLAG El Paso.

The pandemic has caused the cancellations of live performances from New York to California and everywhere in between leaving stages bare and theater houses empty. “Just because we’re social distancing, does not mean that we have to be alone,” said Veronica Frescas, director of the production. “Zoom and similar platforms offer the opportunity to bring live performances to the community in the safety of their own homes.”

Frescas called a few of her fellow performing artists and friends and asked what they thought of the idea. Frescas stated:

They jumped at it. It’s been so much fun working and seeing these wonderful people and actors again during rehearsals these last few weeks. They’ve been such troupers and gathered their own props, and costumes with whatever they can find in their homes.

With all the upheaval and uncertainty these days, Frescas says she believes that art is a healing force. “Steel Magnolias” is such a favorite; six Southern women who talk, gossip, needle and harangue each other through the best of times and comfort and repair one another through the worst,  it was a no brainer to perform it. But we also wanted to give something more to the community and that’s where we agreed to recognize the work that our local chapter of PFLAG,” said Frescas. “With June being such a heavy month for our country and community, we see protesters taking to the streets during a pandemic we just wanted to offer a few hours of fun, unity, and love through the performing arts,” she added. And it’s free.

Donations are welcomed of course, but the idea is to share the arts and Frescas hopes others will follow suit.
