Donald Trump promised most of you reading this today that he would “Make America Great Again”. He promised you greatness in the vain of extraordinary achievements to reach the stars. Donald Trump triumphantly ordered a space force to bolster America’s defense posture. Guess what?
You the taxpayer pays Russia $25 million per seat on Russia’s Soyuz spacecraft to fly American astronauts to the International Space Station.
That is right, America has no viable spacecraft to fly American astronauts to the ISS.
America depends on Russia to ferry its astronauts up to the space. On February 13, NASA asked for permission to buy two additional Soyuz seats from Roscosmos. If authorized, this would allow American astronauts access to the space station through the first part of 2020.
Originally, NASA was hoping to have access to American manned spacecraft via the SpaceX Crew Dragon or the Boeing Starliner by 2017. We are now in 2019 and the Boeing spacecraft has yet to launch its first unmanned test. SpaceX suffered a “significant event” this month while testing its escape rockets, putting in doubt whether the SpaceX spacecraft can launch a manned mission later this year.
So, while Donald Trump is busy spinning bad news about his presidency with flights of fiction about an American space force or a manned missions to Mars, the reality is that America has no spacecraft currently and relies on Russia to fly American astronauts.
So much for making America “great again”! Oh, and the Space Force is a Space Farce.
