Yesterday we discussed immigration reform and the scenario where the Democrats, the Republicans and Donald Trump can proclaim a win. Should the legislators move towards swapping universal healthcare for immigration reform, the question becomes, what would “progressive” legislators like Alejandria Ocasio-Cortez do?
Ocasio-Cortez is well known for supporting the abolishment of ICE. Her progressive platform includes legislation for a “clear” path towards citizenship. Alejandria Ocasio-Cortez’ immigration platform focuses on keeping families together and on abolishing ICE. She has said little about allowing new immigrants into the country.
But against her immigration platform lies an ambitious Medicare for all, free education and universal jobs guarantees, in addition to housing for “as a human right” promises. Ocasio-Cortez will have to pick which items on her platform she will focus on in the give-and-take that is American legislation.
Will the immigrants end up being the ones she gives up to get the Medicare-for-all she has promised her voters?
Of course, all of this assumes she can get the old-guard Democrats to go along with her progressive agenda. Once the Democrat’s old-guard gets their say in the Ocasio-Cortez politics, it will be the immigrants who will be put aside for political expediency.
History has proven this.
