As I prepare for Christmas, I can’t help but wonder what would Donald Trump do if the Savior’s parents came knocking on the door? Would Trump and his cohorts give shelter to a pregnant woman and her husband, our would he put up a wall to keep them out?

Two thousand years ago, an unmarried woman – Mary – got pregnant. Joseph, her fiancée married Mary when he found out she was pregnant, although he wasn’t the father. As Mary prepared to give birth to Jesus, she and her husband had to travel to Bethlehem because the country’s leader had demanded that all his citizens return to their family’s part of the kingdom. The ruler wanted to take a census of who was in his country to ensure they paid their taxes.

When Joseph and Mary arrived in Bethlehem, they could not find a place to sleep. They ended up spending the night in a manger, full of animals. There, Mary gave birth to Jesus.

For those of us that believe in the story of Christ, the story of Christmas tells us about two pilgrims who were welcomed into a community even though they were strangers.

As we get ready to celebrate Christmas, the question I ask myself, where would Mary give birth today, if she had arrives at the U.S.-México border asking for asylum? Would it be a manger? Would it be a tent in the desert? Or, likely, would it be no-man’s land on a bridge waiting to be allowed to ask for asylum?

More likely, Joseph and Mary would have been given a helping hand in México as they traveled to give birth to the Messiah because they would have stumbled across a wall on the border. Joseph, a carpenter and Mary a homemaker would not have qualified for a “merit-based” immigration system.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, both Joseph and Mary would have been impeded from traveling to America because both come from the Middle East. Never mind that, both would be persecuted for their religion.

Worse, Mary, a pregnant woman would have been repudiated by those wanting to end “anchor baby” immigration in America.

The answer is simple, under Donald Trump, Joseph and Mary would have been treated as “dirty” immigrants polluting America and everything would be done to keep them from giving birth to The Savior in America.

  1. Feliz Navidad, Martin. Thank you for your effort this year. BTW, Caesar ordrered the people to return to their place of birth which is why the holy family was on the road that year. 😁
