As voters head out to the polls today to cast their votes on several city charter amendments and school board races, proponents of the climate charter launched a last-minute rally yesterday to get voters out in support of Proposition K. In a press release issued yesterday, proponents rallied behind a Twitter video released by Beto O’Rourke urging voters to vote for Proposition K.

O’Rourke stated that “There’s literally almost no other place with as much to lose should we fail to successfully confront climate change before it’s too late.” O’Rourke added “That’s why Amy and I are voting for Prop K, also known as the Climate Charter, in the current El Paso municipal election.”

Climate charter organizers will be holding a rally at the Municipal Rose Garden at 3418 Aurora Dr. at 1:00 pm.

May 5 Press Release

Climate charter opponents have spent over $1 million in advertisements to discourage El Paso voters from voting for the climate charter. Seven El Paso businesses contributed to the opposition of the measure. The rest of the opponents’ funding came from energy-related entities. Supporters of the climate charter have spent around $30,000 with less than $100 contributed by El Pasoans towards getting voters to the polls in support of the climate charter.

An analysis of the early voters by El Paso News suggests that Proposition K will be voted down by El Paso voters because older voters outnumber the younger voters who put the measure on the ballot.

Organizers of Proposition K will be holding a “Watch Party” at 7:00pm, after the polls close at Hoppy Monk at 4141 N. Mesa. The Hoppy Monk is a craft beer restaurant owned by Joseph Valenzuela who recently penned an editorial on El Paso Matters in support of Proposition K.
