El Paso Politics received an update from El Paso Independent School District (EPISD) teacher Xavier Miranda. As readers may remember, Miranda was facing termination from EPISD. The controversy over Miranda’s proposed termination involved Miranda’s decision to challenge the El Paso Federation of Teachers & Support Personnel (EPAFT) union’s current president, Ross Moore, for the union’s presidency.
As reported by the El Paso Politics in August, the El Paso EPAFT chapter’s president Moore was controversially involved in the decision-making process of the union’s decision on whether to defend Xavier Miranda before the El Paso Independent School District’s (EPISD) board. Miranda was facing termination from the school district.
On Sunday, the El Paso Politics received an email update from Miranda about his termination.
The email read:
“I would like to share some good news regarding my employment as a teacher in EPISD:
On December 1st, I was informed by district administrators that I was no longer being processed for termination, and that I was being reassigned to Franklin High School as a full-time Social Studies teacher, starting in January.
I am so grateful to return to the classroom, after having been denied the privilege for the past four years, and having endured three administrative investigations and various disciplinary actions. However, during this tumultuous period, I continued engaging in community efforts that opposed the exploitation of our children by former superintendents and their associates.
Fortunately, I was sustained by the good souls that remain in the collective struggle, and their support kept me going—-I share this joy with them.
While I am ecstatic about returning to the classroom, for what in January will be my thirty-fourth year as a teacher, I am still going forward with my candidacy for president of the El Paso American Federation of Teachers. Regardless of outcome, I look forward to defending our public education system.
Lastly, the impact of having lost this learning year to the pandemic is significant, and our children face obstacles that can only be addressed through community collaboration. Looking forward to an authentic and inclusive process when selecting our next superintendent.
