A few days before Christmas, a woman – which does not deserve to be named – ran over a 14-year-old girl because she “was Mexican”. But the woman wasn’t done. She hit another 12-year old boy the same day. One would think she was done with the mayhem. But no, on the same day she berated a clerk at a convenience store with racist slurs.

We know that the woman targeted the 14-year old girl because she told the arresting police officers she did so because the little girl “was Mexican”. This is not an isolated incident. Ever since Donald Trump came down the escalator to announce his presidential ambitions, he unleashed a war on Mexicans.

What the woman did was in direct response to Donald Trump labeling people like me, as rapists and criminals. Racist people like the woman who attempted to kill a 14-year old for simply being Mexican is part of the landscape in the United States. They exist. They always have. But they stayed in the shadows, where they belong. Well, not anymore.

What is different is that Donald Trump has made it acceptable to target Mexicans for being Mexican.

Some readers will attempt to argue that this is not true. That I’m making a mountain out of a mole hill.

But let’s look at the evidence.

Remember the killer who drove hours to El Paso to kill Mexicans? He did so because he felt it was acceptable to kill Mexicans. When did it become acceptable?

When Donald Trump told everyone that “Mexico sends its worst,” that it sends “rapists”. He made it acceptable to target Mexicans for being, well Mexicans.

That is when it became acceptable for a Border Patrol Agent to stop two women in the interior of the United States for simply “speaking Spanish”. Never mind that there is no law in the United States that requires speaking only English or that Spanish was here way before English. Under Donald Trump, probable cause to seek the citizenship status of a U.S. citizen is to hear them speaking Spanish.

Never mind that in the United States it is perfectly acceptable to round up U.S. citizens because they look Mexican and deporting them. This is all acceptable because of Donald Trump.

Currently I am living in a country that it makes it perfectly acceptable to run over 14-year girls simply for being Mexican.

Is this what the Donald Trump voters wanted? Is this what they voted for?

I’m sure I won’t get an answer because some will secretly agree that is what they voted for but are too chickenshit to admit it publicly. Others will simply shrug their shoulders and think it doesn’t affect them.

As for me, I’ll just keep looking over my shoulder wondering when someone will think I’m “too Mexican” to be among the living.
