It is with great sadness that I must now admit that the future is bleak with nationalism and xenophobia driving the political agendas of the major countries. Last week’s win by Boris Johnson make this crystal clear. For those that might not remember, Johnson was one of the major architects behind Brexit. His recent campaign likely ensures Brexit is finalized.
It seemed like there was a gleam of hope after the 2018 elections when the Democrats took over the House of Representatives, mainly on a backlash against Donald Trump. Brexit’s stalemate also signaled that rationality had returned.
But it wasn’t so. Xenophobia and nationalistic politics have reared their ugly heads again.
Brexit is now likely to pass, breaking up the EU as the United Kingdom leaves it. Soon after Brexit is finalized, it is likely that Boris Johnson will sign a trade agreement with Donald Trump, delivering Trump a “win” in the run-up to the 2020 U.S. elections.
But it isn’t just Boris Johnson in the UK, or Donald Trump in the United States. It is also Andrés Manuel López Obrador also known as AMLO in México. AMLO is not a conservative. Far from it. AMLO is left leaning on the political spectrum. But his domestic policy is also nationalist inward looking.
AMLO’s government accepted the recent updates on the UMCA, or the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement because AMLO does not want to be distracted from his domestic agenda. AMLO does not want to have to deal with a capricious Donald Trump invoking the 6-month trigger to leave NAFTA.
AMLO needs the money that NAFTA generates and if that means he must accept the USMCA, he did.
This is the reason why narco-violence is on the rise in México, because AMLO misdirected his new national guard force to enforce U.S. immigration law on México’s southern border. In so doing, AMLO’s plan to change the dynamics of the Drug War in México left a void that the cartels have capitalized on.
It wasn’t that AMLO wanted to act as Trump’s immigration czar, but it was the path that least distracted from AMLO’s inward agenda.
The Boris Johnson win shows that the xenophobes’ have now figured out how to become mainstream and motivate their ranks to ensure their political forces are in pace to run their agendas. Supporters like AMLO only empowers them even more.
Sadly, I must reluctantly point out that it is very possible that Donald Trump is elected to a second term in 2020 because rationality and morals have been put aside by blaming those that are different for the problems we all face.
Next thing Martin will tell us is that Churchill was racist for not wanting the Nazis to invade Britain and make it more inclusive.
