It is hypocrisy at its most poignant form.
When the ballpark controversy was at its height of controversy, several community members filed numerous open records requests with the city asking for documentation about the process that drove the ballpark. Among them was Stephanie Townsend Allala who spent a considerable amount of money to litigate the city into forcing it to release public records.
Townsend Allala spent her own money to force city transparency.
There was one news outlet that was notoriously silent on the city’s refusal to be transparent and even went so far as to be hostile towards Townsend Allala’s quest for government transparency. That was Bob Moore’s El Paso Times. Not only did the local newspaper not support Townsend Allala in her quest to force the city to release public records, but the paper never made an attempt to investigate with the same furor the ballpark as it has Larry Romero.
Imagine, for a moment, what the outcome may have been had Bob Moore allowed his staff the same leeway to file numerous open records requests and investigate as he has with Larry Romero. At the very least, the $22 million loss to the taxpayers would have been avoided and at best the ballpark would have been properly vetted by the taxpayers.
Instead, the outcome we have today is that the El Paso Times was paid by the City for a building many feel would not have been sold as it was and at the price that was paid for it. Do any of you really believe that is a coincidence?
Ask yourself this, what is the difference between Larry Romero and the ballpark processes? Both are controversial. Yet, the furor in filing open records requests searching for information on Larry Romero is much more intense then what the paper did for the ballpark. Why is that?
You may have noticed that absent from the picture I have been sharing of Cortney Niland, Susie Byrd, Ann Morgan Lilly, Michiel Noe and Steve Ortega all wearing ball caps at city hall is the El Paso Times. Although absent, the El Paso Times was instrumental in imposing the ballpark on the community. The paper is now leading the charge to distract you from asking the important question; who among Cortney Niland, Susie Byrd, Ann Morgan Lilly, Michiel Noe and Steve Ortega, directed or had a conversation with Joyce Wilson about delaying the sales of the bonds for the ballpark.
That is the $22 million question that the El Paso Times is helping to cover up.
As we continue to sit on the sidelines with the ongoing soap opera, designed to keep you distracted from the important question, keep an eye out for the notorious players and how they are manipulating you into ignoring the important questions.
Also, keep in mind what it means when someone is threatened with being “Luther Jonesed” in the future. Larry Romero needs to be investigated but he is just a pawn in a larger game, a sacrificial lamb to keep you from asking too many questions that the real corrupters don’t want you asking.
Stop and think for a minute. Have any of you considered the damage these stories of corruption, unethical conduct, special justice, millions in tax wasted or about to be passed on to taxpayers, investigations, chaos throughout the region.
Oh that’s right people in other areas will not see or hear these reports or they will ignore them because they are being lured with a trolley, baseball stadium, a super sized flat screen and a very small plaza that has taked over two years to renovate and still not finished.
No El Paso doesn’t have the corner on justified unethical behavior. A former Commanding General at FT Bliss decided it’s ok to steer contracts to his buddies and tries to convince us he took one for the team.
Look out here comes the tourists tidal wave. Oh yes, here comes all the corporations and families stampeding to El Paso. Whats a few dysfunctional government entities, no jobs, stale economy except for the king pins. Foreclosed houses and empty dwellings but they keep building in the mistaken belief people will re-enact an old west land rush.
The Editor and the DA, I don’t know how they can sleep or walk around town with a cheese eating grin. Nothing to grin about neither one is doing their job. Maybe the cavity search is a lot more prevelant than we realize.
The EPT had some skin in the game for the city hall purchase but not for their current jihad against Gonzalez and Romero. It is as if they overlooked genocide and came down on a traffic ticket.
i concur! didnt the slimes get way above market for their digs and we paid dearly to have them refurbed? hogwarsh…
Well said Jerry K!
Wow.
Excellent report. Did Moore or the Times’ lawyers bother to comment for this article or release a statement?
I am curious. What are the economic and tourism numbers numbers since the baseball park was built? Is the team making money, and how much is the city paying for its upkeep?
Good job, keep digging.
I just found your website. Thumbs up.
i cannot wait til we find out the taxpayers’ subsidies for the stadium this year. last year martin said it was 900k i think, with airport traffic down and Hotel occupancy down, i wonder if its now over a million and growing. good stuff martin
Wait a minute ! I just read that Jerremy jordan was arrested for domestic assault and swiftly fired.
Ann Lilley Morgan assaults city employees twice, is allowed to stay on city council and no prosecution. Was there a deal for the employees ?
I don’t condone any assaults, just pointing out the special Justice.
