City Council Review

• Designated last week of November as El Paso Celebration of Family Unity , Peace and Heritage;
• Directed the submission of grant application to Criminal Justice Division for Victims of Crimes;
• Directed the submission of grant application to Attorney General’s  Fund for Crime Victims; Approved co-sponsoring the Toys for Tots Event;
• Removed Paul Strelzin from Cable Communications Commission.  He submitted his letter of resignation;
• Approved ordinance to close Durango Street for display of military vehicles on the first week of December.

Other news

• Tiguas have been given an extension by a federal judge.  They will not have to close down on November 30th pending an appeal of the case
• A suspect is in custody in the abduction and murder of a little girl.  Alexandra Flores, 5, was found murdered in central El Paso.  She was abducted at a lower valley Walmart;
• Police and Fire leaders are under fire for allowing their contract to be given last priority in new budget.  The budget value of the proposed new contract is less than the old one;
• ElPasoMetro.com has launched ElPasoRestaurants.com and is reviewing local eateries;
• No immediate plans to use National Guard on border.  Border Patrol will be first called to bolster border crossings;
• City continues to approve tax increases, now, in the form of Certificates of Obligation.  Local editorial writer, Charlie Edgren, has called for a petition against it;
• Theresa Caballero has appealed for help from the community in the El Paso Fights Back Coalition’s effort to rollback taxes.  An additional 10,000 signatures must be gathered in under four weeks.
