The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) issued a new eviction moratorium across the country halting all evictions until December 31, 2020. Under the CDC order, announced yesterday, renters cannot be evicted from their apartments this year.

The order goes into effect tomorrow, September 4, 2020 and last until December 31.

The eviction moratorium prohibits evicting a tenant, provided that the tenant has provided the required declaration to the apartment manager.

The tenant declaration, under penalty of perjury, requires that the tenant stated that they have used “best efforts to obtain rental assistance,” that the tenant does not anticipate to make more than $99,000 ($198,000 joint income) this year, that the individual is making “best efforts to make timely partial payments; and eviction would likely render them homeless.” [emphasis in original]

Anyone violating the CDC order is subject to fines up to $500,000 per violation and/or jail time.
