There are times when I am left speechless, completely unable to articulate a word, must less a sentence. Today is such a day. Some readers may be aware of the 8-year-old boy that police in Key West tried to handcuff only to find out that the handcuffs were too big. It happened in 2018 and we are only finding out about it today.

The video poignantly demonstrates why police reform is needed.

Forget that the little boy hit a teacher. Forget that it is a crime to do so and focus on two grown men trying to handcuff the eight-year-old. When you do this, it becomes clear what is wrong with the American police system.

It is designed to punish anyone coming in contact with the police. It is designed to treat citizens as them, instead of us. Two grown men had nothing to fear from a little boy.

That is it. It is as simple as that.

But because American police treat citizens as them versus us the – attitude that it is o.k. to handcuff a 64-pound eight-year-old seems normal to them.

Therein lies the problem. The two officers acted without thought or common sense. They robotically thought a pair of handcuffs should be used on an eight-year-old.

Whoever does not see what is wrong with this, or supports the police officers for attempting to handcuff a child, has no business believing in a social order where citizens are free of police abuse or of police malice.
