Although eviction moratoriums have ended in El Paso, the need for rental assistance remains. Recently, the City of El Paso announced a Rental Assistance Program. It has $10 million in federal funds to help tenants make rent payments for up to three months.
Under the program, landlords will be allowed to offset up to $1,000 in rent payments for up to three months per qualified tenant. The program, officially launched today, expects to start making payments starting on August 3.
The program is currently enrolling property owners into the program. Once the landlords have been verified and accepted into the program, a Participation Directory will be compiled. Tenants, needing rental assistance, need to wait until their landlord has been accepted into the program.
Once the landlord has been accepted into the program, they will contact their tenants and gather the necessary verification document needed for rental assistance. Once the documents are gathered, the landlords will submit the applications online.
To qualify, the tenant must have a household income under 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI). For a household of one person, the AMI is $32,900, or less. For two people, the AMI income is $37,600, or less. For a household of four, the income threshold is $46,950 or less. The AMI is measured for incomes after April 1.
The City expects to start making payments on August 3.
