Growing up in México one of the things I heard the most about the United States is how U.S. citizens love the idea of freedom. Gringos will fight for freedom I was told repeatedly. The gabachos can own guns was uttered each time the conversation steered towards the differences between my country and the U.S. History books teach us how the U.S. was founded on the idea of freedom for the people. I look around me today and I ask myself, whatever happened to the land of the free?

Americans have relinquished their freedoms, and most don’t even realize it.

U.S. voters have become passive – do as they are told citizens. This became crystal clear to me on Monday when U.S. voters were ordered to leave their homes because of Elon Musks’ “Star Hopper” rocket test.

The County of Cameron Emergency Management issued an “Alert” notice to residents of Boca Chica in Texas. The “action required” for the residents by the alert notice stated that “approximately 10 minutes prior” to the test flight, the residents of Boca Chica “would be provided notice by the sounding of a police siren.” The notice stated that upon hearing the police siren, residents, “at a minimum…must exit” their homes and “be outside” any building on their property during the rocket test.

There was a fear that a malfunction may cause the windows to break, or worse the rocket crashes into homes.

Boca Chica is a small community in Texas. Texas is considered one of the bedrocks of “freedom loving” Americans. Elon Musks’ rocket is a private venture using private funds.

Yet, the government ordered people out of their homes for a rocket test by a private company.

Apparently, freedom no longer means the freedom to be in your home when ever you want to be. Apparently in the U.S. freedom does not include the right to live in your home without the fear that all the windows in your home will explode due to someone testing a rocket.

I’ve being noticing the erosion of freedom across America over the years. The right to paint your house any color you want is now usurped by the whims of a homeowner’s association. In some communities, activists take homes because they have some “historical” value or make it impossible to repair a home because it sits in some historical overlay.

Americans have become accustomed to being told to take their shoes off or have someone else pat them down under the guise of security needs. Americans willingly submit to road searches by police officers because drugs are a problem in the country.

U.S. voters have given up the right to personal privacy because they fail to question how technology uses their personal information.

Each day, Americans willingly give up their freedoms for convenience. Many aren’t even aware of it.

The residents of Boca Chica may or may not have complained about the order to leave their homes, but nonetheless they have submitted to the whims of Elon Musk simply because no one rebelled to an order ordering them out of their homes. As for the rest of the county, where is the outrage when a private company can order people out of their homes?

  1. Sadly true. Maybe we could invoke the spirit of the Old South, the Rebellion, that tells the controllers, PC ninnies, bureaucrats and triggered snowflakes to stick it where the sun doesn’t shine.
