By now all of you know the answer to the worst kept secret in America is that Beto O’Rourke is running for president. For many of the El Pasoans reading this, it is a fantasy on the verge of coming true, an El Pasoan becoming president of the United States. Many of the El Paso readers will put aside their dislike of O’Rourke’s politics and hope beyond hope that El Paso is put on the national political spotlight. For the rest of the readers, those from the rest of the nation, the collective mindset is, who is Beto O’Rourke? It is more like what does Beto O’Rourke stand for. For the Mexican readers, those in Juárez and other parts of northern México who care about American politics, the question is, why are certain paisanos so invested in O’Rourke? The rest of México doesn’t really care.

Judging by the number of national and a few – as in counting them on one hand – international journalists that have reached out to me for information about O’Rourke over the last week and the one before, the secret was already out that Beto was running. It got to the point that explaining the context behind who Beto is to reporters was so time consuming that I made a list of the blog posts I have posted over the years and told the reporters, read these and ask me specific questions. I’ll share the list at the end of the post for those of you who want to catch up on Beto O’Rourke.

I also set up a set of documents that everyone is asking for. The DUI arrest and the case of his mom’s company’s money laundering guilty plea. I also added the newspaper report of the time a “white powdery substance” was found in his father’s car. You can find these, as well, at the end of this post.

Earlier this week I got a phone call from an El Paso “well-connected Democratic Party-political operative” about Beto. I put his label in quotes because the first thing out of his mouth, when I answered the telephone call, was that I was not to identify him on my blog. After a few minutes of negotiating how I was going to address his telephone call, we agreed I was going to use the label in the quotes above, refer to him as a he, because that is what he is, and post the substance of our conversation on my blog. After swearing me to secrecy as to his identity, he got to point: was I going to write negative stuff about Beto?

I knew then that Beto was going to run for president, just as I predicted it on my blog post from September 19, 2018 (link) where I wrote that no matter the outcome from the Ted Cruz race, Beto was going to run for president. No one, including me had predicted how close Beto O’Rourke would come to beating Cruz in that race.

But the caller would not confirm nor deny if Beto was announcing his candidacy for president.

However, the caller got to the point. Beto is good for El Paso he told me. El Paso needs the good national attention. I reminded him that I was not from El Paso and that I no longer lived in El Paso after he told me that the greater good was for my hometown.

He was insistent on knowing who had contacted me about Beto O’Rourke. I refused to tell him. He wanted to know what the reporters were asking for. I told him it was general questions about policy and such. Then he got insistent that I provide him a list of reporters because if I was “about transparency” that I should let everyone know who is writing “hit pieces” on O’Rourke. I responded that I was not going to release a list and that he presumed too much to know that the reporters were looking to write hit pieces on Beto.

He continued working me by telling me that Beto O’Rourke would be good for immigrants and that he would take down the wall on the border. “He will beat Donald Trump,” he told me. He added that Beto O’Rourke will “unify” the Democratic Party around him if given the opportunity. He told me that Beto is the middle ground between the far-left and the conservatives of the Democratic Party.

I responded that my interest is in writing what I see, as an immigrant, in America and that I was not looking to support one candidate over others, or one party over the other, for that matter. I reminded him that I have posted many posts about how the Democrats are worse than the Republicans, notwithstanding, Donald Trump, when it comes to immigration reform.

He gave up after he realized that he was not going to manipulate me. But, I am halfway tempted to out him because of his tone. But, I keep my promises so I will not.

However, the call made me realize that my blog readers from El Paso will generally be like the caller. They would want me to put-aside Beto’s politics for the good of El Paso, and immigrants.

That is why politics is something to be discouraged as a talking point around the dinner table. Too many self-serving interests getting in the way of intellectual honesty.

Will Beto be a good president? Will Beto be good for the border? Will Beto be good for immigrants?

The truth is I don’t know. However, there is no doubt that he would be better than Donald Trump. But, so will anyone else running against Trump.

But the thing that continues to bother me about Beto O’Rourke is the secretive machine that has being preparing him for his presidential run since the meeting in El Paso where it was proclaimed, he is going to be president of the United States.

Ask yourselves a very simple question. What is Beto O’Rourke’s true national agendas? What positions has he taken on national issues, not through speeches but through action in Congress?

The reason why I get so many calls from national reporters is that Beto O’Rourke is an enigma even in El Paso. No one truly knows what Beto’s national policy agendas really are.

Beto O’Rourke has being carefully crafted over the years to run for president. Why? Should be the question everyone should be asking themselves. Who or what is driving Beto to the presidency?

As they say follow the money. Beto has created a carefully crafted public persona of a grassroots effort to recruit him for the presidency and fund his campaign. But follow the money trail. The money trail will lead you to wealthy people in America and in México with their own personal agendas at stake. Find those and the Beto’s public agenda will become abundantly clear.

It might feel cool to hope for the impossible, an El Pasoan as president but as the saying goes, be careful what you hope for.
