Last week, Donald Trump, while in Europe, stated that Europe immigration is “changing the culture” of the European countries. Therein lies Trump’s animosity about immigrants, especially Mexicans. Most will gloss over the comments noting that there’s nothing wrong with wanting to keep American “values” intact or that immigrants should “assimilate.” But the “changing culture” comments succinctly tells us what the xenophobes and Trump fear and what is driving the keep immigrants, especially Spanish-speaking ones, out of the country.

Culture is best defined as the beliefs or norms of a people. Among them are religious views, language and social traits shared by people. The problem for America is that the issue of assimilated immigrants misses a fundamental point not share by other countries. It is the Mexican element.

America expanded westward and assimilated other cultures, mostly Native American and Mexican. The key being that as America expanded it assimilated the other cultures, not the other way around which most would like to believe is true. For proof of this, consider that America has the second largest Spanish speaking population in the world. Numerous cities and states keep their Spanish names even to this day. And, as if that was not enough, almost every American has eaten a taco, or two. The fact that Mexican food is as common as hot dogs across America proves that the Mexican culture has proliferated across America.

The inconvenient fact is that the Mexican culture is as American as apple pie today.

Therein lies the fear that the drives that anti-immigrant debates.

It is not about border security nor about jobs, but rather it is about a minority feeling displaced by a culture that has always been a part of America.

Some readers are about to burst into rage as they digest these words, but it gets worse as the rest of the facts fall into place.

America was founded on the principal “of the people and for the people.” The idea being that America represents the will of the people, i.e. those that can legally vote. Ouch!

Yes, the driving fear is that the anti-immigrants have realized that the changing face of America is leaving them behind. It is leaving them behind because rather than “assimilate” into the growing majority, the minority wants to keep its culture dominating the face of America, even it goes counter to the ideal that America is a country “of the people and for the people.”

The most inconvenient fact is that changes are being driven by the very principal that founded America, the notion that the people make the laws that suits them. It is American voters that are saying no to English-only laws. It is the voters that are saying no to policies separating the children from their parents to make a political point about immigration.

And, it is the laws that will ultimately say, speak Spanish if you like, or open the borders up for our brethren who Make America Great each and every day.

So, rather than demand Mexican immigrants “assimilate” the real argument should be that the soon-to-be White-Anglo-Protestant minority must “assimilate” to remain relevant in America.
