Once again, a terrorist targets the United States and once again he proves that the danger to the United States from ISIS-inspired terrorism isn’t from México nor the U.S.-México border. But the Mexican-haters and immigrant-haters are nonetheless using the recent terror attack as a reason for the wall and travel ban on immigrants from certain Muslim countries.
Here’s what’s known about Akayed Ullah, the would-be terrorist that wanted to blow up the New York Port Authority yesterday. Ullah is from Bangladesh who arrived in the U.S. on an immigrant visa on February 21, 2011. He is now a legal permanent resident, or a Green Card holder. He is 27 years old.
According to New York NBC 4, Ullah arrived in the United States through Kennedy Airport in New York. He legally immigrated to the United States under some-as-yet-to-be-determined immigration status. What is important to note is that Akayed Ullah did not enter the U.S. as an undocumented immigrant nor did he cross the U.S.-México border to come into the country.
Like most of the terrorists before him, Ullah has no connection to México nor is he a citizen of any of the countries that Donald Trump has implemented a travel ban on. Akayed Ullah is from Bangladesh, a country that is not part of the six countries that Trump’s travel ban has targeted.
So, the question, again is, how is the Wall going to keep America safe? Also, how does banning travelers from Chad, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen have impeded Akayed Ullah from attempting to kill and maim Americans?
The problem with demonizing immigrants, especially Muslim and Mexicans, under the guise that they are a danger to the community is that immigrants, like me, are so focused on trying to correct the distorted record of how dangerous we are, that the real dangers to the country are allowed to plan and execute their attacks. Wouldn’t it make more sense to focus on that what is driving people like Akayed Ullah to attack the country, rather then allowing fearmongering to make national public policy that does nothing to make the country safer?
Building the wall and imposing the six-country travel ban would not have stopped Akayed Ullah. Nor are they likely to stop future attacks because focusing on the U.S.-México border, Mexican and Muslim immigrants distracts from the real danger.
That is the crux of Donald Trump’s attacks upon immigrants, he is allowing the Akayed Ullah’s of the world to execute attacks on Americans.
Here’s a novel idea, how about instead of spending upwards of $20 billion for a wall on the U.S.-México border that is not needed, that money, instead, be used to shore up the infrastructure to investigate, identify and intervene in Jihadist recruitment of people who want to endanger American lives?
Doesn’t that make much more sense?
Martin Trump was right once again! Now this just pisses you off but get over it you are wrong!
The wall is about making Mexico respect our border, something it has failed to do so we are not a safety valve for Mexico’s poverty problems. It will not impede a single legal immigrant who will use the ports of entry.
As for the NYC terrorists (plural now), another diversity success story.
No, I don’t think that more money is the answer. The investigators will go after dissenters more aggressively and to manufacture ‘terrorists in the motherland’. A better alternative is for the USA to stop policing the world and stop its warmongering.
Quote below is from an article in The Root (New Mexico School Shooter Was A Trump-Loving, White Supremacist Troll) by Michael Harriot. It shows how apt the FBI is at investigating.
“The FBI actually visited Atchinson a year before the shooting, when they investigated one of his online posts (you’re not going to believe this) asking where he could buy a gun for a school shooting. The FBI said determined Atchinson posed no threat, even though he was a frequent visitor to white supremacist websites and posted explicit threats of violence to himself and others.”
For those shaking in their boots over the southern border, The Intercept has an article by Molly O’Toole that will raise those trembles a notch or two in the Richter Scale.
