It just can’t get any better! While some El Pasoans are lamenting how El Paso and the borderland is depicted in the movie Sicario, the City of El Paso will be discussing refunding some tax money to a former politician and currently incarcerated drug trafficker on Tuesday. (Agenda items: 5.2, 5.3, 5.4 & 5.5)
Yes, that is right, the city is trying everything it can to argue that drug trafficking is not a way of life in the city while it prepares to refund almost $3,000 to a drug trafficker. This can only happen in El Paso.
Incarcerated Guillermo “Willie” Gandara, Jr. has requested that the City of El Paso refund $2,865.23 in property tax money he over paid. Gandara is currently incarcerated in Texarkana and has an expected release date of May 31, 2017.
As you likely remember, on August 17, 2012, Willie Gandara pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to sell more than 50 kilos (+100 lbs.) of marihuana. In February of 2012, he was arrested at the Sierra Blanca checkpoint with a load of marihuana. He was a sitting county commissioner and was running for state representative when he was arrested.
Yet, public officials want to have a public discussion about how the movie Sicario portrays the borderland. Peter Svarzbein is organizing the round table.
I wonder how he intends to vote on Tuesday, to refund the money or not. Never mind, it’s all about keeping the lie intact that all is well in El Paso.
That is the problem with lies; you can’t keep them bottled up for ever because the truth always has a funny way of making itself known.
