By now, you all know that Veronica Escobar’s latest attempt to control how you live is to remove the soda machines from county buildings. Yes, I know she is arguing that it is an attempt at lowering the county’s costs on employee insurance. The fact is that it is beyond that.
It is part of her belief that only she knows what’s best for the community. She and her supporters really do believe that if they offer more “healthy” alternatives that the county employees, in one of the most obese cities in the world, will magically start eating healthier. Forget that it only takes a quick trip to the any fast food place or convenience store to get a super-duper-duper soda to last the day.
Herein lies the crux to the stupidity of her plan.
She has been arguing that the County should have more authority to levy fees and taxes to shore up the county’s budget. Yet, however small, the soda machines are moneymakers for the County. Veronica Escobar’s solution is to send county employees to the nearest convenience store for their daily fix.
