Although there is still a place for professional news providers, I believe that the focus is moving away from news delivered at the behest of advertising dollars to news consumers demanding what and how they access the news of the day. Consumers have been empowered by the Internet and as such, the news delivery vehicles are changing. As with all change, there are those that still cling to the old ways in hopes that they can forestall the future.
As soon as individuals became aware of my Newsies project, many people got excited as others moved to criticize my project. As expected the professional news people are the biggest criticizers. Debbie Nathan, in her ChucoPedia public group on Facebook, criticized Newsies because we have no editors. Nathan added that anonymous contributors was the “perfect recipe for baseless gossip” and that “it would drown out honest attempt [sic] to impart real news and information.”
Instead of “baseless gossip,” what Newsies has quickly become is the go to place for news and information on the cultural center issue, thanks to frequent contributor Miguel Juárez. This is exactly why Newsies is needed because important community information such as the cultural center issue is ignored by the news media and other media outlets.
Those interested in the on goings of the cultural center subcommittee have no other place to go to then to Newsies to satisfy their hunger for the latest information.
That is the genesis for Newsies, a news outlet driven by the consumers who want the news that is important to them. Besides Miguel Juárez, Newsies now has various contributors. Only one has chosen to remain anonymous. Abel Rodriguez has started to share the podcasts from his radio show, “Dialogue.” Rodriguez has also indicated that he will begin to blog on various topics. Rodolfo Acuña has started to post in depth articles about the US-Mexico dynamic. Juárez has been keeping us updated on the cultural center subcommittee as well as other topics of interested to various readers.
As evidenced by the traffic and activity on Newsies there is an audience hungry for news that is interesting to them. It has not become the “baseless gossip” that professional news individuals fear about the future of the news delivery vehicles. Instead, it has become the only source for news that individuals are looking for – news information created and consumed by the same people.
